This past Sunday we went over how we as the family of God are to "share our stuff." Some people are born out of the womb saying "mine." Some see a quarter on the ground and yell "mine," while others call "shotgun!" for the front seat in a car, and some of us won't even let another look out our food/dessert for fear they might take what is ours.
But our families pull us from our selfishness. We are forced to share lots of things in our family: clothing, food, rooms, bathrooms, toys and much more! And the larger our family is, the more we end up sharing things out of necessity.
So with the family of God we have needs. We looked at 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 how Paul wanted the church in Corinth to respond to the needs of the church in Jerusalem. Here Paul is talking about giving monetarily. And any giving assumes having. So what does a junior high/high school student have to offer/share with the church?
There is a great encouragment here for us to look at what we have - our passions, skills, abilities - and understand them as gifts that we have first received from God to bless others. Not only that, but there is a responsibility placed upon us. If we want to encourage someone from the word of God, then we must first be enraptured by the Word ourself! If we want to encourage someone with prayer, then we should be praying regularly.
Our difficulty is that we are good at sharing what is convenient - and this applies to both the good and bad. We inherit this from our first parents (Adam and Eve) who were quick to take the fruit because it was expedient, and quick to share the blame because it was convenient. But Christ in obedience to the Father took the full blame/judgment that we deserve, drinking the cup of God's wrath, and He is quick to offer eternal life to all who believe.
Questions to ask your son/daughter
- What are your passions/desires/love and skills/abilities/strengths?
- Why do you think God gave you those passions and abilities?
- How can you serve others through what you have been given?
- How can you help to change the world?
