When We Gather Together: We Have a Benediction
What’s the benediction at the close of our worship service for? It is a request for God to pour out His grace in response to our worship and renewed conviction to love and serve Him in all we do. It’s a blessing in the tradition of Aaron’s blessing in Numbers 6:24-27; Paul’s conclusion to Romans in 16:25-27; and the end of Jude in 1:24-25. As we gather in worship we ask God’s blessing of sustaining grace in our “call to worship”; as we scatter, God’s sustaining grace is asked for. It marks out our worship gathering as a definitive means of God’s blessing.
